Ramsey Colts FD

Based in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, Ramsey Colts Football Development is a Charter Standard Club that provides football training and development for children aged 5 – 16 years. This grassroots junior football club for both boys and girls is a Registered Charity run by a dedicated team of some 75 volunteers. Training takes place at the Tom Jones Memorial Fields in Mill Lane, Ramsey.
The club has been using British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Sports&Turf topdressing for three years and on being named 2022 Hunts FA Grounds Team of the Year the club’s grounds team received a prize of 20 tonnes of Sports&Turf. This has been used to help renovate the junior 11 v 11 pitch, which suffered some chafer beetle and crow damage this year.
As part of its Pitch Improvement Programme, the club has utilised Football Foundation grant subsidies to apply 148 tonnes of Sports&Turf to its nine pitches over the past three seasons, i.e. two pitches each of 11v11, 9v9 and 7v7, and three 5v5 pitches for the past two seasons. The Sports&Turf was applied using a Dakota Spreader.
Club Secretary Martin Muir and Head Groundsman Craig Golightly, who are also both trustees of the charity, are pleased with the difference the Sports&Turf has made to the pitches:
‘The material is light and is applied readily. We have noticed improvements in soil stability and drainage, and it also must contribute (along with our pitch maintenance programme) to our improved root depth. Before our programme of investment, back in 2019, our root depth averaged just 60mm and the pitches were graded as ‘below standard’ or ‘lower-basic’. Now our root depth has reached 230mm and some of our pitches have reached ‘advanced standard’.
Each load came with a delivery note and with weighbridge data recorded. We have been very satisfied with the delivery co-ordination.
