One of the top tips we give to greens staff who manage golf courses, is to have a winter course set-up. It can be extremely beneficial to introduce a ‘winter set-up’ policy from November to March so that wear can be minimised on the main tees and other high usage areas.
Also, this is an excellent time to start essential maintenance before spring sets in and summer comes. Greens staff will be reviewing the construction of bunkers and tees, filling in divots, and top-dressing fairways. For this, greens staff will need both a high-quality sandy loam compliant topsoil and an easy to apply first class dependable top dressing.
Why it is important to construct bunkers and tees out of good quality topsoil?
Firstly, with a good topsoil, greens staff are easily able to mould and shape tees and bunkers as it is important for golf courses to have holes that have well structured, bunkers, tees and fairways.
A quality topsoil will exhibit excellent nutrient retention, including key nutrients like phosphorous which is fundamental for root growth and development as well as magnesium that enables plants to photosynthesise effectively.
Also, a good quality topsoil has good water retention properties this helps keeps tees playable all year. Topsoils with a good peculation rate allow water to move downwards through the soil easily avoiding waterlogged tees.
Finally, a quality topsoil promotes and sustains the growth of grass by providing improved fertilisation and assisting in the establishment of seeds and encouragement of healthy root development.
What are the benefits of top dressing?
Top dressing is essential for maintaining the playability and accessibility of the course. Primarily, it improves drainage and aeration which are essential for preserving the golf course and keeping it open all year round.
Furthermore, top dressing improves the health of the turf by providing vital nutrients such as phosphorus and magnesium. These nutrients are essential in the development of seeds and the increase in root depth.
