The days are getting longer, and we will soon be turning the clock back for British Summer Time. Therefore, it’s now time to think about spring planting ready for the summer.
For spring planting, it is important to use a compliant sandy loam with optimum reserves of organic matter and nutrients. It provides the ideal environment for establishing young plants and encouraging healthy root growth. Also, by using a British Standard complaint topsoil, it gives peace of mind that the soil has been thoroughly tested.
To keep your garden healthy and have a lovely lawn and borders, you need to keep your soil healthy and ensure it contains enough air and nutrients as well as allow water to move freely through it.
“Planting into the right soils is so important and knowing that you have the right environment for any new planting is reassuring. Boughton have been producing soils for over 30 years and have unrivalled knowledge of natural soils providing peace of mind, now also working with British Sugar TOPSOIL, that peace of mind extends to a wider range of natural soils to help support and enhance your planting scheme” explains Jason Lock, Business Development Manager at Boughton.
Nutrient-rich, high quality planting topsoil's like British Sugar TOPSOIL’s HortLoam and Boughton BLS 20 and 40 Natural Topsoil are prefect for general planting, raised beds, planters and vegetable patches. These topsoils are very appliable and bursting with essential nutrients making them an ideal choice for a variety of gardening projects.
Sand is an important ingredient in a good quality sandy loam as it is vital in ensuring that plants do not become waterlogged but at the same time water does not drain away too quickly taking all the nutrients from the soil. Additionally, sand can help to neutralise the pH of the soil which will help discourage weeds and strengthen the roots.
At Uppingham School in Rutland, they saw some great results from using HortLoam and so did Northampton University who were supplied Boughton topsoil for their new Waterside Campus.
